We are officially accepting essay submissions for The Foolscap!

We are officially accepting submissions for the Book and Media Studies student journal The Foolscap. The deadline for submission is December 25th, 2013. If you are in a Book and Media Studies class or any other cross-listed course for the program, now is your time to shine! The Foolscap is the program’s first ever academic journal and will be featuring 5-6 student essays. The essays can be 6-10 pages in length and must be relevant to the theme of old vs. new media. You can submit a maximum of two essays. If you have any questions about the requirements or would like to submit an entry, please email editor-in-chief Keely Kundell at keely.kundell@utoronto.ca

Meet your new editorial team for the Foolscap!

 

Assistant Editor: Chelsea Ricchio
Chelsea Ricchio is a fourth year student at The University of Toronto, majoring in both English Literature and Book & Media Studies. In her spare time she is also the Vice President of Active Minds at UofT, a student organization that seeks to create awareness about mental health issues and foster a community amongst students struggling with mental health. She works at Chapters and her all time favourite book is The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Assistant Editor: Michelle Speyer Michelle Speyer is a fourth year student at Victoria College with omnivorous reading habits, taking programs in English, Book and Media Studies, and Writing and Rhetoric. She coordinates the peer-mentorship program for the English Students’ Union and is Editor-in-Chief of a lovely little journal called Goose. In her spare time she writes and edits for The Varsity and enjoys throwing frisbees for her dogs (and her cat).

Caitlin is a fourth year English and Book & Media Studies student with an interest in publishing. She is also the Secretary and Webmaster of the BMS Student As

BMSSA ♥ Celtic Studies

Celtic Studies has a writer-in-residence, Glenn Patterson from Ireland, for the month of October! He’s available to students who are creative writers (or who are hoping to be) to discuss their work on an individual basis. Glenn is available every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, or by appointment if those times don’t work. Don’t be intimated – he’s a really nice guy who wants to help! He’s a really nice guy and students shouldn’t feel intimidated.

Editorial Board

Are you interested in getting more involved on campus, and within BMS? Consider joining our editorial board, and assist in the publication of our first edition of our academic journal “The Foolscap”. We are currently looking for three Assistant Editors to aid our Editor-in-Chief help build the journal. The Assistant Editor will:

  • Actively promote the journal to the relevant community
  • Edit and review submitted essays, working with author and Editor-in-Chief
  • Aid the compilation and appearance of the journal
The ideal candidate has:
  • Wide knowledge of the subject and those working in it
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse viewpoints and approaches
  • Superior grammatical and editorial skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Familiarity with Mac and MS Word
  • Knowledge of Word Press an asset
  • Deadline driven
If you are interested in applying you can email Keely Kundell at keely.kundell@utoronto.ca, the deadline to apply is October 21st. To apply send Keely your most recent resume, and a page sample of an essay written by you. Interviews will begin before the deadline so we can make the announcement as soon as possible – expect to hear back from us within 48 hours!
If you have any questions feel free to drop by our office hours. Keely will be in the office on Thursday October 10th 2013, from 1:30-3:30 pm. Our office is room 212 in the Kelly Library.
